The heart of yokai.jp is its encyclopedia: 398 entries spanning every corner of Japan, from the snowy mountains of Hokkaido to the subtropical islands of Okinawa.
Each entry includes the yokai's name, origin, personality traits, abilities, weaknesses, and habitat, accompanied by illustrations that draw from historical woodblock prints and Edo-period art.

Yokai Shrine
A digital shrine where you can perform worship rituals, draw omikuji (fortune slips) guided by yokai, and write wishes on virtual ema boards.
The shrine also offers omamori (protective charms) through a divination mechanic. All of this is presented as entertainment, with no religious intent.
There's also a Maya Calendar integration: enter your birth date to discover your guardian yokai through the Dreamspell/KIN system, which maps Mayan calendar cycles to yokai associations.
Combined with the daily fortune feature, the shrine becomes a place to revisit each morning for a fresh yokai encounter.
Night Parade & Beyond
The Hyakki Yagyo (百鬼夜行), or Night Parade of One Hundred Demons, is a legendary event in Japanese folklore where yokai flood the streets after dark. yokai.jp recreates this as a scrollable, immersive experience inspired by Edo-period picture scrolls.
The site also features a random encounter system. Each visit surfaces different yokai in the Encounter section, so you never see the same lineup twice.
An official blog shares deep dives into yokai culture: regional folklore, historical art analysis, seasonal yokai traditions, and connections between yokai and modern Japanese media.
All content is available in six languages: Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, French, and Spanish.
Open Yokai Dataset
The structured data behind yokai.jp is published as an open dataset on GitHub. It includes yokai names, aliases, phonetic readings, regional origins, and category classifications.
Researchers, developers, and creators can use this data to build their own projects, from language model evaluations to games to educational materials.
